What does the word Bariatric mean?
The word Bariatric is derived from two Greek words - Baros meaning weight and iatreia meaning medical treatment.
- Bariatric medicine is the area of medicine dealing with obesity treatment.
- Bariatric surgery is the branch of bariatric medicine using surgical methods as a treatment for obesity.
- Bariatric psychology is the area of evaluation, diagnosis, treatment and education addressing the psychological needs of folks who are concerned with healthy weight maintenance including pre and post WLS.
What is Weight Loss Surgery (WLS)?
Weight Loss Surgery (WLS) also called bariatric or gastric by-pass surgery is gastrointestinal surgery for obesity and is a tool for weight maintenance for folks who are severely obese. The operation promotes weight loss by altering the digestive process.
There are several different types of surgery. These are the three most common types of WLS:
- Reduce stomach size in order to restrict the amount of food the stomach can hold
- Bypass portions of the digestive track that absorb calories and nutrients
- Combine stomach restriction with a partial bypass of the small intestine.
Morbid obesity is a chronic condition that is difficult to treat through diet and exercise alone. Current scientific research on obesity tells us that our physical bodies work against us in the battle to lose weight, which helps us understand why diet and exercise are not enough to control weight. The decision to have gastrointestinal surgery for weight loss is one made between you and your doctor. WLS is an option for people who are severely obese and cannot lose weight by traditional means or who suffer from serious obesity-related health problems.
After surgery, patients follow a dietary plan designed to complement their type of WLS, following their physician's directions. Most patients tend to lose 80% of their excess weight within the first 12 to 18 months. Of course, weight loss varies from individual to individual. The experience of WLS patients suggests there are predictable plateaus and successes in the months after surgery. It is clear that healthy exercise and diet plans are still the keys to life-long health and vitality.
