    NIH Obesity Research

    This website presents information about NIH-supported research to facilitate progress towards obesity prevention and treatment. Through its research mission, the NIH seeks to identify genetic, behavioral, and environmental causes of obesity; to understand how obesity leads to type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and other serious health problems; and to build on basic and clinical research findings to develop and study innovative prevention and treatment strategies. The NIH, other federal agencies and public and private organizations will all play important roles in reducing the epidemic of obesity in the U.S.

Obesity Education Initiative (OEI)

The Obesity Education Initiative (OEI) of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), NIH, was created to help reduce the prevalence of overweight along with the prevalence of physical inactivity in order to reduce the risk of coronary heart disease (CHD), the prevalence and severity of sleep apnea, and overall morbidity and mortality from CHD. Information is provided on the relationship of overweight to CHD risk factors and sleep apnea, as well as information on weight loss and weight control.
